Posting is crashing because we’re overloading it.  Have temp. stored posts from 3/14/09 and earlier to free up space until we get more space…$… In meantime, please try to confine posts to the BNOW activity.  If any of you want to connect privately, email me and I will share your email address with the other(s) you want to contact.

I’d like to  thank all of you who have been contributing to the cam.  40+ of you out of 400+ who have posted (to say nothing of the 200,000+ visits to the page since last May) have felt it was worthwhile to support the cam. I’m hoping that everyone else might feel the same way. While I love providing this cam, it simply ain’t free to do so. Please consider helping out if you haven’t already. Right now it’s no where near paying for itself and I really need the support. Thanks. PD

Thanks so much for the Barn Owl comment archive (above left). Great that we won’t lose the info from early last year. Just one question… is it the high volume of comments or the increase in viewers using bandwidth that is making the monthly expenses rise at such a rate? Or both???

…looks like the owls are enjoying a nice afternoon in sunny CA

    Carol,

Those are ants, I believe Velvet Tree ants, crawling next to and often on the camera lens. Happy watching..

    PLEASE*********** PLEASE***************
Pete has asked us all not to post unneccesary chit chat. I DO NOT want this owl cam to be taken down due to this! Let the people with the knowlege do the posting, and the rest of us just read it!

This will cost us ALL in the long run! The more we can donate to the webcam the longer it will stay up and running, the more we chit chat, the faster we will lose it!

What are the little things running around in the lower left?

  • dave says:

    Pete,

I remember something about only Desert woodrats eating Prickly Pear cactus due to Dusky Footed woodrat not being able to stomach the oxalic acid.. maybe the owl is selective as to species about discarding entrails if the oxalic acid would be harmful to the babies, etc…just speculating.

Regarding megacolon–this condition in infants is never normal–there is pathology involved. If we are seeing dilated colons amont the rats, I can’t help but wonder why. Maybe I’ll check it out later.

Things are quiet rght now. Dad is preening and the babies are quiet.

    Bye for now–

With the discarded “innards”, if not mistaken peregrine falcons are more selective with what they intake when they have nestlings to feed. If i recall correctly when a peregrine falcon manages to get a pigeon the head is discarded because the brain is toxic to the eyeasses. Perhaps this is true with BNO’s as well? Perhaps this may be due to the immune system of the youngsters not being up to full flight yet?

    it is true!

Another hummingbird visit. I like that you can hear it before you see it!
