Thank you all who came or watched yesterday. The intent was to hopefully provide a more in depth experience of learning more about not only owls, but all the other wild things we work hard to understand, share, restore, and/or protect here at Starr Ranch and beyond. Pete

7/19/10 The new view above is the IR cam on the left and the PTZ cam on the right. I set this up so you don’t lose the contextual view from the IR cam when I zoom in with the PTZ cam. And of course, the PTZ gives you some nice closeup views even if I’m not zooming. Please let me know what you think. BTW, the bandwidth use of two views is not much different than what all were watching on the single IR cam during the first brood. Basically, these two cams are reduced in resolution with no visible quality loss so together they are using virtually the same bandwidth the IR cam was using at higher resolution a few months back. Note: The 2 views are not quite synced, but the difference should only be a few seconds. Tech note: I’m gonna replace the hardware that digitizes the right PTZ feed so that “graininess” in the middle of the view goes away. Point: It’s not the cam, but the processor. And I’m quite certain I can fix.

On another note, I think by now most know I’m doing as best I can to make this cam as good as it can be – I’m not done by any means searching for ways to make this glimpse of nature the best experience it can be for all of you. So if you like what you see and learn here, please consider a donation. Any support you might be able to give will be greatly appreciated.  I also hope you know that supporting this cam supports Starr Ranch – point being, no Starr Ranch, no cam.  And I receive no personal gain from this cam aside from the total delight in so many of you folks getting really engaged with these birds and so much else that’s wild through watching, asking and answering questions, and just caring. Thanks, Pete

THANKS to those of you contributing as you watch!  Those watching and not yet pitching in, please think about doing so. A lot goes into making this cam available, including the expense of putting it on the internet for anyone to tune in. Pete

  1. I can see the mom and dad in the tree but can’t see the chicks[owlets]

  2. forgive me for asking, but I think someone mentioned that they were watching a great horned owl sitting on eggs

might I have the link again? I could be remembering wrong though

  3. Pop reached in the pantry, brought out a good-sized rodent to present to mom, and hopped up on top of her. What did he think, she wouldn’t notice that he was bringing her old food?? Come on!!!

  4. That’s hilarious – mom was rasping, as a hint for dad to go get some dinner, so what does dad do? Tries to placate mom with a leftover rodent! LOL

  5. THEY ARE THE BEST CANT WHATE TO SEE THE BABYS.

    CUTE CUTE

  6. Has anyone had a confirmed siting of owlet #3? Also do barn owls mate for life? How long do the babies stay at the nest? Why are both parents banded?

  7. those babys are so cute

  8. RPP, have not heard from you today, probably afraid, right? Regarding your spreadsheet, would it be safe to assume that we might have another little one as soon as tomorrow morning?

  9. All of us, if there are 400 of us watching this could give 10.00 a piece that would be a start for the high cost of running this cam that all of us enjoy watching so very much. That would be the minimum amount. Im sure every bit would help. I do not have a lot of extra funds to due my current job situation. But I love this, I think you all are doing a remarkable job and I dont want it to go away. So, that being said Im going to drum up $30-$50 dollars for you right now, and more as my employment permits. I appreciate all you do. Thank you for allowing me to witness new miracles each and every day!

  10. Hi. I politely agree with Jill from San Diego. Many people wish to view the owls via the cam. Let’s cut the chatter and just let as many people as possible watch the “real” events. We are all very fortunate to have the gift of this webcam. Please don’t let idle chit chat that can be done “off line” cause expensive bandwidth charges.

    Kindest regards.

  11. Expense is, by far, bandwidth, i.e. each person watching uses some.
Something that some of you might be doing that is convenient, but uses twice the bandwidth, is having two of this same page open at same time – one to watch video and one to post (where you lose view of video). That’s the same as two people watching…
Please don’t do this. TX PD

  12. So, Jill, who are the people with knowledge?

Dad is basking in the sunlight while mom is cleaning the area around her, looking for tidbits. She stopped to preen one of the babies. Before these cameras I always thought owls slept during the day and were active only at night. I see that they are indeed just as active during the day.

  13. Thanks so much for the Barn Owl comment archive (above left). Great that we won’t lose the info from early last year. Just one question… is it the high volume of comments or the increase in viewers using bandwidth that is making the monthly expenses rise at such a rate? Or both???

…looks like the owls are enjoying a nice afternoon in sunny CA

  14. Carol,

Those are ants, I believe Velvet Tree ants, crawling next to and often on the camera lens. Happy watching..

  15. PLEASE*********** PLEASE***************
Pete has asked us all not to post unneccesary chit chat. I DO NOT want this owl cam to be taken down due to this! Let the people with the knowlege do the posting, and the rest of us just read it!

This will cost us ALL in the long run! The more we can donate to the webcam the longer it will stay up and running, the more we chit chat, the faster we will lose it!

  16. What are the little things running around in the lower left?

  17. Pete,

I remember something about only Desert woodrats eating Prickly Pear cactus due to Dusky Footed woodrat not being able to stomach the oxalic acid.. maybe the owl is selective as to species about discarding entrails if the oxalic acid would be harmful to the babies, etc…just speculating.

  18. Regarding megacolon–this condition in infants is never normal–there is pathology involved. If we are seeing dilated colons amont the rats, I can’t help but wonder why. Maybe I’ll check it out later.

Things are quiet rght now. Dad is preening and the babies are quiet.

    Bye for now–

  19. With the discarded “innards”, if not mistaken peregrine falcons are more selective with what they intake when they have nestlings to feed. If i recall correctly when a peregrine falcon manages to get a pigeon the head is discarded because the brain is toxic to the eyeasses. Perhaps this is true with BNO’s as well? Perhaps this may be due to the immune system of the youngsters not being up to full flight yet?

  20. it is true!
