June 18, 2008 THEY FLEDGED! One chick took off at 7:55AM PST (The exact time was provided by a kind viewer who saw it happen - Thanks!). The second one took off sometime around 11AM PST. Thank you all for watching and for sending some warm and also informative emails. This cam will go off line shortly. However, if the female rebuilds and has a second clutch, I will put it back on line. Also, I will edit some recorded footage and put it on this page as a download. So keep checking in.

June 16, 2008 The chicks are 21 days old and, as you can see, are packed into this tiny nest. They will probably fledge in the next day or so and will not return to the nest. There is a possibility that the female will have a second clutch. If so, we will keep the cam going. Thanks for watching!

June 10, 2008. The chicks are now 15 days old and doing well. As far as I can tell from some recorded footage, they are fed about every 20-45 minutes and these feedings usually takes less than 30 secs. So you have to watch carefully to see this. Also, you should see the chicks exercising, i.e. flapping their wings periodically. The chicks will probably fledge at 20-22 days.

There has been a Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) nest in this exact spot for the last four years. It's under the porch roof of the Starr Ranch bunkhouse. On or around May 4th, the female began repairing the remains of last year's nest with, among other items, the "fuzz" from the underside of sycamore leaves and also spider webs. On May 7th she laid the first egg of a typical two egg clutch. The second egg was laid on May 10th.

The hummingbird cam will be offline between 10PM PST/1AM EST and 2AM PST/5AM EST

Due to the need to conserve bandwidth, viewing will be provided in five minute increments. You may however, log back on immediately after your five minute session expires.
